Intra Uterine Semination or IUI treatment is a procedure where sperm is directly injected into the uterus around the time of ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization.

Treatment Procedure

Pre-investigation

We recommend first and foremost to conduct various research to see whether intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a feasible method before proceeding with it. Basic semen analysis is requested of the male partner, and specific hormonal blood tests are requested of the female partner. Common tests that are performed on both couples include blood grouping, HIV testing, Hepatitis B and C testing, and blood tests for STDs.

Stimulation & Control

Stimulation medications are given for the development of one or more mature follicles in a woman’s ovaries. Pelvic ultrasound scans are utilized to reach the lining of the womb and the endometrium to assess the follicles’ developmental state. Blood tests can also be used to assess hormone levels and help identify a woman’s most fertile time—the period of time just before or after her period.

Egg Release

After ovulation induction cycles, an hCG injection triggers ovulation, the egg reaches its final maturity, and the egg loosens from the follicular wall.

Semen Collection

A semen specimen is collected from the male partner after 2-5 days of abstinence from ejaculation

Sperm Selection & Insemination

The semen is “washed” in the laboratory (called sperm processing or sperm washing). The sperm is separated from the other components of the semen and concentrated in a small volume. Various media and techniques can be used for the washing and separation. Sperm processing takes about 30-60 minutes.
The more morphologically normal and motile sperm are selected for insemination.
In the insemination process, a speculum is placed in the vagina and the cervical area is gently cleaned. The washed specimen of highly motile sperm is placed higher in the uterine cavity using a sterile, flexible catheter.

Why Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI)?

A couple may choose to undergo IUI treatment for a variety of reasons.

While IUI has a lower success rate compared to IVF, it is a simpler and less invasive procedure, making it a viable first-line treatment for many fertility issues.
